Love in action: The power of showing up

As love month comes to a close, I wanted to share some ponderings about a certain song I love and its call to love.
Tobymac has this beautiful song called “Show Up, Choose Love.”
I know a lot of folks would say it takes more to love than showing up and that’s certainly true.
But, the older I get the more appreciate the meaning behind someone showing up especially in moments that matter the most.
I have watched my mother live this truth out in times where her loss was so deep and she was so broken. She could have chosen to just go home, but she showed up. Every day. For months on end. She showed up for someone else in the midst of her grief and she showed up in the midst of her exhaustion after work. It wasn’t convenient, it wasn’t exciting, it wasn’t about her at all. And I wondered how she could do that. I wondered why she would do that. The answer was so simple. Love.
As I continue to grow as a person, mom, and young Christian woman, I am learning what that’s truly all about. My love is deeper, my heart is softer and my fire is brighter after I welcomed a child into this world.
I think back to moments, not too long ago but still in the past, when God gently placed things on my heart. He asked me to do things I wasn’t always eager to do for others— and I felt uncomfortable. But what He asked me to do was rooted in loving others, in showing care even when it wasn’t convenient or when it didn’t feel like it was being returned.
Isn’t that what Jesus did? What He does for us each day?
Isn’t it something that God paints beautiful sunsets for everyone to enjoy, even those who don’t appreciate them or even believe He exists? Isn’t it something that each morning we are all greeted to a new day and new opportunity to live, even when we might not deserve that mercy? Isn’t it wonderful that we are pursued by a Living God Who thinks we were to die for?
All these things are happening each day.
He shows up for us each day in big moments and small.
The Bible says God is love.
So when we show up and we chose love, we’re following His example and we are choosing Him.
Are there areas in your life today where you could show up and choose love? Is God calling you to love and be obedient even when it doesn’t feel convenient?
I pray you will ask Him for guidance today and be brave enough to act when He answers.
